29 December Day 4 - Ashland to Hillsboro (Portland Area)So I left Ashford this morning a little on the late side. Acting again on a tip from my barista friends, I woke up and walked to Morning Glory, a little breakfast place less than half a mile from my motel. Great coffee (from Uncommon Grounds for you Berkeley lovers)and superb hash browns with eggs benedict were my breakfast. Everything was really yummy, if not so cheap. $15.00 with coffee and tip... it was take-out and fast food for lunch and dinner ;-) If you're in Ashford and stay the night, go there for breakfast - you won't be disappointed. So I slept pretty terribly last night - I just couldn't get to sleep and I woke up like 6 times during the night. I ended up getting up at about 4:00 am and spending time on my computer (btw - wireless here again tonight - that's 3 for 3) messing around with some webpages. The shower at the Timbers motel was the absolute worst I had ever been in - the spray was hard and painful and the curtain was having none of it - it fell open like 7 times and succeeded in covering damn near the whole bathroom (my clean underwear, local newspaper and used shirt included) in bath water as well as providing a lovely puddle that I had to avoid as I stepped out of the shower. It sucked. I laughed though - I figured there was nothing I could do about it. The day was rainy. Almost the whole day. It slowed down my trip, made it so I had to be hyper careful while driving on twisty mountain roads, and prevented me from getting out and enjoying all the beautiful views today's trip was supposed to provide. At times it was a downpour that could only be described as torrential. I did certainly learn some useful tricks about rain driving though - follow in the tracks of the car in front of you - slightly less water on the road means slightly better traction. I did get a few pictures during one lapse in the rain and managed a few serendipity shots while driving. In order to make up for the lost time and to avoid dragging out an already long drive for the day, I shaved off about 30 minutes on my route south of Coos Bay - the 42 was plenty picturesque, so I didn't feel like I was really giving anything up. The coast south of Newport was absolutely stunning. I could definitely see taking a weekend trip down to that area in the future - it's absolutely amazing - sheer cliffs and magnificent waves and tall piney trees. I counted 5 places where the weather and subsequent slides had completely destroyed the roads and work crews were scrambling to build new bridges, repair old ones, and clear debris. Let's just say it has likely been a busy rainy season. I drove through a huge timber mill on Rt. 42 outside of Myrtle Creek (where I left the 5) and saw several river-logging sites where the logs were being corralled for drying and presumably milling. I will repeat - rt 42 was stunning and I could only imagine how wonderful it would have been had it been clear out. Rivers flowing right along the road, twisty-turnies, and thick forest going on in every direction for days - it was a perfect driving road (time for some all-season tires!). Much of the rest was forgettable due to the weather... but I did notice an incredible amount of flooding, again presumably from an overly active rainy season. Hillsboro is very uninteresting and makes me think I should have sprung for the extra few bucks and stayed in Portland. Oh well - something do next time. It feels real today. I've known I was going to be moving - but today I really feel it. I'm here and I'm going somewhere and I'm going to make it great, even if it's hard. .Early morning tomorrow as I'm hoping to finalize my drive and my trip up along the Washington Coast and into Olympia by 1 PM (and I've got 5 hours to drive - you do the math). So, even though it's only 8:40, I'm gonna go brush my teeth, wash my face, do a little reading, and head to bed. Oh, the last word - avoid "Rice Box".. lousy take-out Chinese, my Quiznos lunch was far better (if you can believe that) 28 December Introduction & Seattle Move: The First Three Days of my TripHello Everyone!
I know I tried this once before and it got a little bit out of hand - people started calling me, writing me, emailing me, and threatening me with chemical weapons all in the hope of expediting my next update. Well, new medium, new rules. I'm gonna post when I damn well feel like it. If you read it, enjoy. I don't want to know if you read it. I don't want to know if you like it. I don't even want to know if you like reading it. You are permitted to quote it at any time you see fit and questions of clarification asked in the appropriate context* will not be denied. I don't, however, want to hear about spelling errors, factual inaccuracies (though I will pay special attention to sourcing any factual presentations of importance I list here in addition to making sure no non-comical factual assertions are abused). On the other hand, you are more than welcome to share it with your friends and family, you can read it aloud to your pet in the middle of the night, you can even burn my effigy in Times Square. Enjoy. Caveat Emptor.
* Appropriate Context = we are spending time together, you want to clarify something about an experience you were introduced to here: enjoy
Inappropriate Context = you call me, write me, or otherwise beg me soliciting further information about the post: fuck off. If you can't tell - I really don't want to hear about it.
Oh yeah, one more thing: this is not a blog. It is a place where I write things I want to share. It is a place where I recount intimate experiences. It is a place where I share philosophy deep and shallow. It is not a blog. Call it Phlargo Space if you absolutely need a name. Btw - it's not MySpace either. While better than blog, it is an inappropriate description for this content.
So, here I am the on the night of the third day of my trip from Newbury Park to Seattle. The first two nights I stayed with Mom, Joe, Leah, and Chris in Pismo Beach. We had a really nice time down there, wine tasting, dining out. A special nod would be appropriate to Big Sky Cafe in San Luis Obispo for a delectible Vegetarian Bean Burger, Desserts, and just about everything else we collectively enjoyed during our meals - wine by the glass was a group favorite. If I get a chance I will make a post on Yelp.com (a site Leah and Chris introduced me to during their stay) recommending the location. Further accolades belong to West End Coffee (also in SLO) for a fine Latte and a tremendous Coffee Cake (buttery, sweet, toasty - yum), the Pismo Beach Lighthouse hotel (despite their lack of in-room tea facilities and the absence of tea at the front desk or even hot water) - okay.. it was really just fine - it was what it needed to be, and the Laetitia Vineyard Tasting room (complimentary tastes here). We went to other places but none were specifically worthy of mention. The trip was a lot of fun though and it was great to get to spend time with the group.
This morning I started in Pismo Beach and drove up through San Jose, Fremont, and Redding, all the way up to Ashland, OR. Let's see: Costco has good gas prices which appear to be the same everywhere in the state. Fremont to Redding is very boring. In Redding, check out the Sun Dial Cafe off Rt. 44. I had a great cup of clam chowder there for lunch. Granted, I was starving when I ate it - but it was awesome. The Shasta National Forest was so beautiful! Snow covered trees all over. I tried to take pictures out of the car window while driving just to get an idea..
So shortly thereafer, I arrived in Ashford. What a cool city! Totally, come here. I found nice people willing to recommend other places to go. I had kick-ass fish tacos and a beefy margarita at Agave (for cheap). Great coffee at a place right along the main street and had wonderful conversation with some handsome young female baristas there too. I was feeling very social, so I stuck around and chatted with them about movies for a while before walking some more around the main drag, then coming back to my place here - the Timber Inn - don't use Expedia - call the hotel - cost me $20 more than it should have for the night. The place is good enough but nothing special. Did I mention the tacos rocked? Tangy, crunchy - perfect. Need I say.. "I'm George W. Bush and I approve this message"?
So.. 8:30 here in Ashford and I think this one is going to bed. No fancy bars, pubs, or any of the other fun places the cute young ladies (one of which, Abby, made me a dynamite mocha and showed off her impressive Latte Art Skillz(TM)) at the coffee place recommended, just lazy :) Nine hours of driving and not many dollars of money have that effect on Danny! Whatever! I'm happy so you should be too! Time for sack hitting.
Maybe more tomorrow.. we'll see. If you're nice... If I get fish tacos... |
